Braza! takes their crowd on a musical trip around Brazil to explore the rhythms and sounds of Samba, Funk, Batucada, MPB, Broken Beat, Tropicália, Hip Hop, Forró, House, Boogie, Soul, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Disco, Jazz, Bossa Nova, and so much more this great country has to offer.

Vem-Q-Tem! (Come and Get It!) is a rotating cast of musicians infused with tropical tendencies ranging from samba and MPB to reggae and forró. Their monthly parties at Revolution Cafe always draw a fun crowd eager to dance and sing along.

This time Vem-Q-Tem! will pay tribute to Brazil’s most popular style of music of all times, MPB. We will perform music from some of the greatest MPB artists such as Alcione, Jorge BenJor, Joao Bosco, Jorge Aragao, Paulinho da Viola, Djavan and many others. We will also perform some of Brazilvox’s originals and Antonio Guedes originals.

ACSF will host its Annual Kids’ Batizado Integrado & Graduation Ceremony Saturday, May 12th, 2012.

The Batizado (baptism) is a traditional capoeira graduation ceremony in which new students receive a capoeira nickname and will be officially welcomed into the capoeira community. For continuing students, the Batizado is a time of celebration and recognition of their growth in capoeira.

According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, Brazil is one of the most entrepreneurial countries in the world.
Brazilians have created companies spanning multiple sectors such as energy, finance, agribusiness and information technology. In recent years, entrepreneurship clusters and business incubators have been booming across the country to support an increasing number of startups right up in the radar of local and international VCs and angel investors.

Some analysts say that the current Brazilian startup boom initiated with Peixe Urbano. Launched at the end of 2009, the company is growing rapidly, operating in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile with over 20 million registered users. Investors in Peixe Urbano include Tiger Global, VC firms General Atlantic, Benchmark Capital, and, more recently, Morgan Stanley and T. Rowe Price.

On May 9th, Co-Founder & CTO Alex Tabor will discuss Peixe Urbano’s brand, its new product offerings and the trends in Brazil’s e-commerce.

Alex Tabor, Co-Founder and CTO of Peixe Urbano

A Computer Science graduate from the University of Southern California, Alex Tabor is a specialist in software development. He worked as Software Architect for Power.com, a social media integrator, before launching Peixe Urbano, the first and largest Latin American local commerce website, with co-founders Julio Vasconcellos and Emerson Andrade. Tabor is half-Brazilian, half-American and has lived in several different countries around the world. His passion for information technology has been apparent since childhood, as he launched India’s first online graphic community, a BBS (Bulletin Board System), at age 13.

With a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Marketing from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Stanford University, Julio Vasconcellos returned to Brazil in early 2010 to found Peixe Urbano, company that introduced the daily deal concept in Latin America and was recently awarded “Best International Startup of 2011” by The Crunchies Awards. Before that, he participated in the development of different startups and Internet companies in Silicon Valley, having worked as Director of Business Development for Experience Project, the largest anonymous online community through which users can share life experiences, and later as the first Country Growth Manager for Facebook in Brazil. He started his career at the consulting company Monitor, where he became the firm’s youngest manager, at age 22. Truly passionate about entrepreneurship, Vasconcellos has collaborated with a number of blogs, podcasts and publications, as well as administered courses at Stanford University.

Vicente is an experienced Internet professional, with a passion for social media and a strong belief in the potential of emerging countries such as his native Brazil. He currently works as Director of Engineering at LinkedIn, focusing on building a safe, scalable and engaging professional network site. Prior to joining LinkedIn, Vicente worked for VeriSign (now Symantec) for 8 years in product and international teams. He started his career as a founding employee of CertiSign which became one of the first successful internet startups in Brazil. He has a Computer Engineering degree from PUC-Rio and currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his family.

 Afraid of people and tired of empty social interactions he runs into the jungle. He carries with him an acoustic guitar and a computer. He longs to find comfort in the sounds of the forest. He feels like a Bicho do Mato. He is hurt. He is looking for healing and self-acceptance.

Bicho do Mato (Animal of the Jungle), a Brazilian expression used to describe an extremely shy person, is the title of Joseh Garcia‘s new show. The singer/songwriter took inspiration from his solitude and his

healing moments with Nature to create this wonderful event. In Bicho do Mato, Joseh takes us on a journey in which electronic and acoustic sounds meet popular music and afro-indigenous spiritual songs from Brazil. Introspection, wildlife, and magical deities of Amazonian life are the themes of the show. Joseh sings, plays acoustic guitar, creates electronic sounds and wonderful guest musicians collaborate with their talents.  This is his last performance in the Bay Area for 2012. Next stop is Canada, and then Joseh is ready to take this new show to other corners of the world. In 2011 he released his first Ep Bossa a Trois, recorded in France and produced by Daniel Masson. In the Bay Area he has performed in respected venues and has created innovative projects: recently he did an unusual and successful concert for dogs in San Francisco.

Boca do Rio is musicá organica — live music played fresh. Music inspired by the thousands of lives of musicians and music lovers that have gone before us and laid the rhythmic foundations of samba, baião, samba-reggae, dances for the orishas, and all that gives homage to the beats. Two powerful currents of the African musical diaspora — Brazilian samba and American jazz — converge in the sounds of Boca do Rio (“mouth of the river” in Portuguese). Boca do Rio highlights the velvet tenor and sweetly melodic compositions of guitarist Kevin Welch, who formed the group nine years ago as an offshoot of San Francisco’s highly popular Vivendo de Pão, and the percussive drive of the Brazilian powerhouse Alex Calatayud. Scott Johnson drives the ensemble on a persuasive lilt and Larry De La Cruz and Eduardo Amado complete the sound with deep bass and melodic horns.

Boca do Rio exists to share and celebrate music and everything that it brings to our lives through the cross-pollination of the Americas.

Lucio K has taken the Mashup to a new level in Brazil. As DJ of the World’s longest running Brazilian dance party “Brazooka” in Rio de Janeiro (alive and well for 11 years), Lucio K knows Brazilian rhythms. He injects spice to the art of the Mashup by layering and transforming diverse rhythmic styles such as Baile Funk , Samba, and Maracatu, as well as adding hundreds of instruments and pop vocals, all mixed live on stage.
